Ads and privacy

How ads work in free-pi, what is collected from your sessions, and the promise that ad content never reaches the model.

How ads work

Ads keep free-pi free. They appear in the terminal as framed cards, and the whole card is a clickable link in terminals that support links. /support opens today's advertiser in your browser. Clicking is optional and gives you nothing extra.

Ad content never reaches the model

Ads are drawn directly on the terminal screen. They are never added to the conversation, the prompt, or any tool result. The model does not see them and cannot be influenced by them. This is enforced by an automated test that fails the release if any ad content reaches a model request.

Third-party ad provider

Some ads come from a third-party ad provider, Gravity. To pick a relevant ad, Gravity receives excerpts of your recent conversation. This is stated on the consent screen.

Consent

The first run shows a consent screen before anything is sent to the server. In summary, it says:

  • Inference is free. Ads and training on your sessions keep it free.
  • Your coding sessions (prompts, code, files, and model responses) are saved as traces and used to train models. They may be shared or sold to third parties. After you accept there is no opt-out, except where the law gives you one.
  • free-pi tries to remove personal information from traces before storing them, but cannot promise they are perfectly clean.
  • free-pi is in alpha and testing, with no warranty or uptime guarantee.
  • If GitHub email capture is enabled, your GitHub email is collected and may be used to contact you about the service.
  • The CLI updates itself when a new version is available. You can turn this off.

If you decline, the CLI exits and nothing is sent to the free-pi server. The authoritative text is the Terms of Service and the Privacy Policy. You can open them from the agent with /tos and /privacy-policy.

What this means in practice

Do not put secrets, credentials, or code you are not allowed to share into a free-pi session. Anything the agent reads or writes in a session can end up in a trace.

Your data

There is no self-service deletion yet. To ask about your data, email legal@freepi.ai with the subject "Privacy Request."

Where credentials are stored

Your sign-in token is stored on your machine at ~/.free-pi/agent/credentials.json. free-pi-cli logout deletes it.
