# A free AI coding agent in your terminal.

Canonical: https://freepi.ai/

The best harness, now with batteries included.

Based on the [Pi agent harness](https://github.com/earendil-works/pi) by Mario Zechner. The CLI is open source (MIT): [GitHub](https://github.com/dennisonbertram/free-pi-cli).

## Install

```sh
npx free-pi-cli@latest
```

Invite a friend: you both get +5,000 credits a day for 30 days. Get your link with /invite in the CLI. [Check your referral status](https://freepi.ai/referrals).

## How it works

1. **Run the CLI.** Execute `npx free-pi-cli@latest` in your terminal.
2. **Sign in with GitHub.** Approve the sign-in on a freepi.ai page that opens from your terminal. No payment details needed.
3. **Code for free.** Get a daily allowance of free coding help. Tasteful terminal ads cover the compute cost.

## Free image generation

Ask for a mockup, icon or illustration and free-pi draws it. No image plan needed.

- Mockups and icons for your app: UI screens, landing heroes, logos, illustrations.
- Saved into your project: every image lands in your `images/` folder.
- Shows in your terminal: inline in iTerm2, Kitty, Ghostty, WezTerm and Warp. Other terminals get the file path.

No API key, no card. Each image counts toward your free daily allowance. Try it:

```sh
npx free-pi-cli@latest
```

Then ask: `make an app icon for my todo app`

Made with free-pi:

## Cyber Defense

Your security work should not stall because a model refused lawful work on your own systems.

Defense is an opt-in section of the `/model` picker for signed-in GitHub users. It lists models for security work: finding and fixing vulnerabilities, hardening, and auditing code and systems you own or are authorized to test. Defense models are abliterated: open-weight models with their refusal behavior removed, so they help with lawful security work that general models decline.

- **Bundled security-audit skill.** free-pi ships the audit method and reference checklists from Cloudflare's open-source [security-audit skill](https://github.com/cloudflare/security-audit-skill) (MIT). free-pi runs it in a single agent, without sub-agents or an OS sandbox, so the agent follows the method itself and you validate each finding yourself.
- **Reverse engineering with `/reverse-engineer-anything`.** Analyze software you own or may lawfully test, such as native binaries, JS and Electron apps, APKs, .NET assemblies and websites.

For systems you own, employer systems you have permission to test, and in-scope bug bounty targets. Do not use it against anyone else's systems.

## The deal

Transparent access.

- **Model training.** We may train on session data to create a better experience and more powerful, lower-cost models.
- **Early experiment.** This is an early experiment. Expect it to evolve.

## Who it's for

Built for developers who refuse to keep paying more for coding tools. If you're a student, indie developer, or building where standard tool pricing is prohibitive—this is for you. It's also for security work on systems you own or are authorized to test: the opt-in Defense models and the bundled security-audit skill help you find and fix vulnerabilities.

## Why free-pi

- **Free, with no card.** Tasteful terminal ads pay for inference, so you do not enter payment details.
- **A real coding agent.** Built on the Pi agent harness and running in your terminal.
- **Your choice of models.** Switch models anytime with `/model`.
- **Free image generation.** Ask for a mockup, icon or illustration and it lands in your project.
- **Built for security work.** Opt-in Defense models, the bundled security-audit skill and `/reverse-engineer-anything`, for systems you own or are authorized to test.
- **Open source CLI.** Read the code on GitHub.
